After Tuesday’s fabulous performance away at Cinderford, Raiders returned to the DOADC Stadium to take on mid-table Mangotsfield United. Raiders came up against a defensive Mangotsfield team who offered little going forward.
First Half
Raiders started lively, creating several chances. Jordan Murphy’s shot on 16 minutes, following a free kick, was blocked by the keeper, and Jake Collins’ attempt on 37 minutes hit the bar. Mangotsfield created a few chances and never looked dangerous going forward.
Goal. Against the run of play, Mangotsfield were awarded a penalty in the 38th minute. Harry Simons played through the very pacy Kyrese Morrison, who fell in the box when tackled. The referee pointed to the spot, signalling that the ball had been handled.
Mangotsfield’s captain, Lewis Powell, stepped up and shot past Raiders keeper, Charlie Emery, who dived the right way and came close to saving. In the final minutes of the first half, Mangotsfield could have made it two when Powell shot wide.
Second Half
The second half was dominated by Raiders, who had the majority of possession, though creating chances was difficult. Mangotsfield delivered a good defensive performance, packing their box, which limited Raiders’ shooting opportunities.
Prince Henry had a shot blocked early in the second half, and both Jake Donnelly and Jordan Stoddart had headers in the box that narrowly missed the target.
Goal. As the game entered injury time, it looked to be slipping away from Raiders. In the 93rd minute Raiders were awarded a penalty after substitute George Hadley was brought down in the box.
Jordan Murphy calmly stepped up to the spot and shot the ball into the net to level the score. While Raiders had the majority of possession, they found breaking down a very defensive Mangotsfield side difficult. Mangotsfield had just one shot on target, their penalty.
Although the result was disappointing, Raiders never gave up and maintained an attacking performance. As we enter the last four games of the league season Raiders remain in second place, and there’s all to play for.
