The Royals started strongly, full of confidence after winning their first three league games. They enjoyed the majority of possession during the opening half and created their first opportunity on 12 minutes, when Ayo Lekuti’s shot was deflected wide.

Raiders were forced to make two early substitutions following injuries to Jordan Stoddart and Jake Collins. Despite the disruption, the Raiders defence remained solid as the Royals continued to press forward.

Raiders began to create opportunities of their own, with Prince Henry coming close when his shot went over the bar.

In the 33rd minute, Raiders launched a pacy counter-attack which culminated in a stunning strike from Henry. His swerving shot found the net, leaving Royals goalkeeper James Wren stranded.

Just two minutes later, the scores were level. Following a corner, the ball was cleared off the line, but Royals’ Aaron Cameron reacted quickest to head the ball into the net.

Not long afterwards, Raiders goalkeeper Charlie Emery was called into action, producing an excellent save to deny Lekuti from a powerful shot.

Second Half

The second half was highly competitive, with both teams playing good football as the weather conditions improved.

Raiders made some excellent runs down the wings. One such run saw Jordan Kondo deliver a cross to Manny Olaloko. Marked by two defenders, Olaloko still managed to get a shot on target towards the near post, only for Wren to make the save.

At the other end, Emery made another important save to deny the Royals from taking the lead.

The Royals finally took the lead in the 78th minute, disappointingly from another corner. Kory Burke rose at the back post to head the ball into the net.

Raiders searched hard for an equaliser and came agonisingly close in the dying seconds of the match. Jake Donnelly managed to break through the defence, only to see his shot narrowly miss the post.

The game, particularly the first half, was affected by the difficult weather conditions, but credit must go to both teams for playing good football in challenging circumstances.

Raiders worked hard throughout and gave everything in their search for an equaliser, but ultimately it was not to be their day.

It’s back to league action next week, with Raiders travelling to Barnstaple Town for their first league away game of the season.
