Worcester Raiders produced an impressive performance at Claines Lane as four different goalscorers helped them to a convincing 4–0 victory over Slimbridge AFC.

The visitors arrived in Worcester as last season’s Hellenic Premier League champions and made the stronger start, but Raiders weathered the early pressure before taking control and eventually running out comfortable.

Raiders began brightly with an early effort comfortably saved, but it was Slimbridge who enjoyed the better of the opening 25 minutes.

The visitors controlled much of the midfield and pushed forward looking for an opening, but Raiders’ new-look defence stood firm. Goal-bound efforts were blocked, crosses were dealt with and goalkeeper Charlie Emery commanded his area well as the hosts absorbed the pressure.

Despite Slimbridge’s promising start, it was Raiders who broke the deadlock after 25 minutes.

A long throw from Jake Donnelly was launched into the penalty area, where Jordan Murphy rose to head the ball home and give Worcester the lead.

The goal changed the momentum of the contest. Raiders grew in confidence, began winning more of the midfield battles and pushed forward looking for a second.

That second goal arrived five minutes before half-time. A scramble inside the Slimbridge penalty area eventually fell kindly for Sam Kelly, who reacted quickest to find the net and send Raiders into the interval with a 2–0 advantage.

Raiders take complete control

Slimbridge attempted to respond after the break, but Raiders increasingly looked the stronger side and began to take control of proceedings.

Murphy went close to adding his second with a header that drifted narrowly past the post before Raiders struck again in the 65th minute.

Adam Taylor produced the goal of the evening, unleashing a powerful effort into the top-left corner to make it 3–0.

Taylor almost scored again shortly afterwards when another close-range effort crashed against the underside of the crossbar and bounced down in front of the line.

By now Raiders were firmly in command and continued to create opportunities.

The fourth arrived in the 82nd minute following sustained pressure inside the Slimbridge penalty area. After several attempts at goal, the ball eventually fell to Prince Henry, who calmly poked it home to complete an emphatic victory.

Slimbridge continued to battle, but there was no way back as Raiders saw out the closing stages and secured both the three points and a clean sheet.

Encouraging start to Step 4 life

The result gives Worcester Raiders seven points from their opening four Southern League matches, an encouraging return in their first season at Step 4.

Perhaps just as pleasing as the scoreline was the manner of the performance. Raiders had to withstand a difficult opening spell against a strong Slimbridge side before growing into the contest and becoming increasingly dominant as the evening progressed.

Four goals, four different scorers and a clean sheet made it an excellent night at Claines Lane.
