Worcester Raiders are making history as they compete in the FA Cup for the first time ever as they travel to Elderstubbs to take on a Daventry Town side, who are a step higher, in the Extra Preliminary Round this Saturday.
It was an emphatic start to the season for the Step 5 new boys as Raiders netted 5 against Fairford Town at Cinder Lane in their season opener.
The job wasn’t smooth sailing however. Fairford Town actually took the lead with 7 minutes gone, as Danny Gudger squared the ball to Ross Langworthy to put Town into the lead.
That lead lasted a matter of seconds though as the Raiders attack straight after that goal resulted in a leveller. Isaac Cooper tucked away a lovely volley at the back post to grab the equaliser. New signing Rich Smith cheekily lobbed Joe Wright, in the Fairford goal, to give Raiders the lead, before Cameron Walker and Syrus Warren-Paul grabbed goals on their competitive debuts for Raiders. Sam Carey netted a looping header late on to secure the 1-5 away win! Raiders sit in 2nd place after the first game.
Focus now turns to Saturday's FA Cup Extra Preliminary tie against Daventry Town. The Northern Premier League Midland side are starting their competitive 22/23 season against Raiders this Saturday. They've had a difficult pre season, against some strong sides such as Coventry Sphinx, AFC Rushden & Diamonds and Stratford Town. Last season, the club ended the season in 16th place but 15 points clear of the relegation spots.
Bobby Noakes caught up with Assistant Manager Tyrone Henderson after Raiders’ emphatic 1-5 away win on Wednesday night, ahead of a historic FA Cup this Saturday for the Worcester side.
“It’s a great occasion for us but it will only be a good occasion for us if we get the result and in the hat for the next round.”
“I think we can handle the step up. But saying that, that’ll only happen if we prepare properly and approach the game correctly.”
“We know that we are the underdogs in this tie and it’s our first ever game in this competition, so Daventry Town will fancy themselves on Saturday. We just need to try and be at our best to give us a chance on the day.”
“We have Jordan [Murphy] back. He missed out on Wednesday. We’re still missing a few though. Louis [Monaghan] & Rob [Shaw] have hamstring injuries. Brogan [Halpin] has an ankle problem. Jamie Lucas is away.”
