Raiders made the short trip to Kayte Lane to face the high flying Mitres, who could top the league with a win. Unfortunately Raiders
didn’t read the script, as goals from Stan Asomugha and Cam Monteith combined with an outstanding team performance and
resolute defending saw Raiders take all three points.
First Half
Goal: The Mitres 0 : 1 Raiders
Raiders enjoyed a perfect start, going 1-0 up after just 15 seconds.
A long ball up field from Charlie Emery with Asomugha giving chase and deftly lobbing the Mitres' goalkeeper, Lewis Clayton.
The Mitres began to push forward looking for a quick response, but they met a very strong defensive unit, a trademark of Raiders and
manager Jordan Lewis. The backline coped well with the home side's attack, supported by an in-form Charlie Emery in the Raiders
goal.
Goal: The Mitres 1 : 1 Raiders
After soaking up plenty of pressure, the Raiders' defence was finally breached in the 28th minute. A long ball found Mitres'
Reagan Messenger, who brought the ball down beautifully before smashing it into the net.
Shortly after, Raiders' Jordan Kondo, who had been superb up to that point, was forced off with an injury and replaced by Cam
Monteith.
The Mitres nearly took the lead in first-half injury time. Some excellent build-up play from the hosts saw Emery pull off an astounding save to deny Ross Langworthy.
Second Half
Similar to the first period, the game remained fast-paced after the break. In the 50th minute, The Mitres' Will Turner saw his shot strike the post. Twenty minutes later, an effort from Aaron Evans-Harriott forced Emery into a fabulous recovery save after the ball had looped high above him.
Goal: The Mitres 1 : 2 Raiders
In the 78th minute, while down to 10 to men as Jake Donnelly was off the pitch receiving treatment, Raiders produced the move of the
night. A superb cross into the box by Asomugha found Monteith who headed powerfully into the net, leaving Clayton with no chance of saving.
The Mitres once again pressed forward in search of an equaliser, but the Raiders' defence stood tall. Looking the stronger of the two
sides in the closing stages, Raiders limited the hosts to long-range efforts and well deserved their win. This was a hard-earned and thoroughly well-deserved victory
against a side that narrowly missed out on promotion last season and is looking to go one better this year. It was a fantastic
collective team performance that showcased immense team spirit and cohesion. It was great to see the growing number of Raiders
supporters following the team home and away celebrating the win with the team.
Raiders are firmly making their presence known in the league, and this win sets up a captivating clash with Weymouth this coming
Saturday.
