Karl Gormley enjoying life at Sixways

Karl Gormley is relishing the prospect of finishing the year at the top of the table as Worcester Raiders gear up for this Wednesday’s Uhlsport Helenic League Division One clash against Moreton Rangers at Sixways Stadium (kick-off 7.45pm).

Gormley, who has formed a tight bond with fellow Joint Manager Mark Owen and Assistant Manager Richard Upton, believes his side’s success has been built on a solid defensive unit.

Raiders have kept two clean sheets on the trot within a matter of days, having defeated Abingdon Town and Newent Town 2-0 respectively. Victory on Wednesday could move the Sixways outfit six points clear at the top of the log, which would be the perfect tonic as Gormley tucks into his Christmas turkey.

Jordan Stoddart has been a man mountain at centre-back alongside Sam Carey, while new signing Ryan Young has steadied the ship in goal during Raiders’ eight game unbeaten run in the league.

“I’ve been really impressed with our defence in recent weeks, and the addition of Ryan [Young] has solidified things between the sticks,” said Gormley.

“Logan Stoddart and Aksum White have also performed really well for us, and this has allowed the likes of Kai Mahon and Isaac Cooper to what they do best in the final third.

“It’s important that we continue with the same mindset, attitude and application on the pitch.”

Eying another midweek festive clash against Moreton under the Sixways lights, Gormley is expecting another stern test.

“There are no easy games in this league, and despite their league position, we will give them the respect that they deserve,” he added.

“Every team who comes to Sixways love the experience of playing at a Football League standard ground, and the opposition players are taking pictures on their phones.

“If we approach the game with the right attitude and performance levels, then we will be fine.

“I’m really enjoying life at the club, and Mark, Upo [Richard Upton] and the medical team have really helped take the team to the next level and it is imperative that we continue in this way.”
